An open network for secure, decentralized communication

Matrix is an open source project that publishes the Matrix open standard for secure, decentralised, real-time communication, and its Apache licensed reference implementations.

We support you in implementing, building and developing complex secure messaging networks based on the Open-Source-Protokoll Matrix.

While with Signal, Whatsapp or Telegram you can only write with people who also use Signal, Whatsapp or Telegram, Matrix is an open communication protocol. Matrix is intended to allow users of different services - i.e. messenger-agnostic - to communicate with each other. Matrix thus only provides the infrastructure for communication. The respective program for communication - the client - is to be chosen by the users themselves.

What makes the Matrix system so interesting for authorities and ministries is that they can build their own clients for it and run the communication via their own servers.

An important idea in Matrix is Interoperability. This means that Matrix is open to exchanging data and messages with other platforms using an Open Standard. We refer to the connection to other platforms as bridging.

Bridging is what enables a Matrix-based app, such as Element, to interoperate with traditional proprietary apps - for instance, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Signal, Telegram or WhatsApp.
